The Samsung Galaxy Y, or Samsung Galaxy Young, is an entry-level Samsung phone designed to serve the basic needs of Android users, with a price that’s also at the baseline. These are the specs of the Samsung Galaxy Y:

- 160MB Internal Memory

However, for nothing more than Php 110 extra, you get to tether your Samsung Galaxy Y to the SmartNet system.
Yup, you read right. Smart Communications is selling the Samsung Galaxy Y at only Php 5,990 on Prepaid, and you get to use the SmartNet network for free until December 31, 2011. Remember that though SmartNet may be made available for other users to use on non-Netphone Androids, so far, only Smart Communications Consultant Jayvee Fernandez has been able to get his hands on the SmartNet app. Not only that, there are rumors that Smart will only give access to SmartNet for free on its Netphone models, and may charge non-Netphone users certain fees for the use of the system. Thus, if you want to get the most out of a Samsung Galaxy Y as a Netphone, it’s no biggie to spring an extra Php 110 for SmartNet access, right?

Love and hate can be expressed for availing of postpaid mobile phone plans. But no one can deny that the biggest draw of the mobile phone plan is the free phone. While it was the last to jump onto the bandwagon of highlighting one of the "Big Three" smartphones: Globe has exclusive rights to the iPhone, Globe raced to offer the Blackberry but got jostled out by Sun thanks to its better data plan offerings, no one really had the big idea to create an Android-centric marketing line. And Smart Communications Inc. finally took the initiative.
Sure, the Samsung line of Androids really met considerable success on Globe, as well as on Smart, even on Sun, but none of the mobile networks ever really marketed it as an Android line. Samsung may be a great brand, but just like Nokia, it is more of a consumer cellphone company than a premium geek's brand. HTC, however, is now synonymous to the phrase "Premium Android." Its technology is top of the line, and the way the HTC delivers the Android, it elevated the platform to a level that can actually compete with the iPhone.
Thus, it is excellent for Smart Communications Inc. to discover a marketing angle that will make its postpaid plans matter. Thanks to its new line of Android offerings exclusively launched by them, they now seem to be the premier postpaid carrier for the Android.
The plans are very reasonable, with the phones free with plans that start at Php 1,000 a month. A far cry from Globe's iPhone offerings, from which you can get the iPhone for free only for plans that start at Php 5,000 a month. So why bother going for a pocket-burning iPhone, at Php 120,000 by the time your contract with Globe ends when you can get an HTC for only Php 24,000 by the time your contract with Smart ends?
The Android as a platform may not be as slick as the iOS yet, but it's a worthy contender. Rendered by HTC and powered by Smart, we doubt you can go wrong with this one.
