Android Pub : Getting To Know Me

Hi, I'm Android Pub. No, I don't frequent English watering holes at the day's end (though I did spend a good time studying in the UK), Android Pub is just my handle as the publisher of Android Alliance - The Philippine's First Online Magazine for Android Users.

Why I'm writing this intro is for all readers of Android Alliance PH to understand where I'm coming from as I share my stories on my Android journey. After having written about my first Android, a Motorola Dext, I was about to write about my second Android. Then it dawned on me that it would be best to tell you the story of what I do and why I need two Androids - ALWAYS. So here goes...

A little bit about myself. I'm an advertising executive. I used to work in a multinational ad agency in Makati. I left the agency a few years ago to slip into semi-retirement. As I write, I am at the threshold of starting a new engagement with another multinational agency, not as an employee but as a strategic alliance partner.

I am also a multipreneur and a Certified Digital Marketer. I blog. I write. I take pics...loads of them. If you're wondering what these pics are, these are mainly pictures of the billboard advertisements in EDSA, SLEX, C5, NLEX and elsewhere in the country. I take a lot of pics of advertisements as well when travelling abroad. Thus a phone with a good quality camera is very necessary.

I also play golf and usually work while playing. Hence the need for a phone that is easy to use in between shots when people I work with bug me via phone or SMS in the middle of the game.

This picture shows me planking on the golf course while my son and his teacher from school are watching. This is how I literally take Steve Jobs' urging to Stay Foolish.

To Err Is Human : More on MotoBlur

This is the post where I can sort of let my hair down so to speak. For more than a year now, I have referred to my first Android phone as a Motorola Blur.

I have actually missed the fact that it is a Motorola Dext as seen in the pictures below.

I said to myself, "How could I have missed that?". Frankly, there is only one explanation to it. Like a kid who opens his new presents on Christmas morning, I was eager to dive into my first Android last November 2010 when I bought it in Singapore, easily dismissing what was on the package. Nevertheless, the proof is shown below. It is a Motorola Dext.

I made this emergency post because The Scribbler called my attention that one of our readers, Nikki Vias, made mention that Motorola Blur or Motoblur is not a phone but a software or user interface which collates the updates on social networks in one place.

Aptly put, Motoblur is a push-based service focused on social networking developed by Motorola. It aims at functional similarity to Palm's Synergy, including such features as Remote Wipe. Motoblur includes a variety of widgets which combine various social networking portals such as Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter as well as other services (news or weather reports) all in one place. Feeds and data are regularly pushed to these widgets.

Blur is the UI, Dext is my phone. MotoBlur is not only on Dext, it is also on Motorola Atrix 4G, CLIQ (DEXT), Backflip, Devour, Flipout, Charm, Droid Pro, Flipside, DEFY, Bravo, Droid X, Droid 3, Droid 2, and Motorola Droid Bionic.

Apologies to all who may have been briefly confused as I was. The fact that when I would turn on my phone and the Blur logo appeared did not help in reminding me that the phone was a Dext.

Oh well, to err is human...and that's why we need exobrains like Android phones!

How Do I Get A Motorola Blur?

From the time I posted two notes on my year old Motorola Blur, some people have been asking me, "Where can I get a phone like yours? Punching into hard keys just makes so much sense." .

I guess this applies very much to those who are like me who are of the 'typewriter era'.

Well, here's my answer...it will be difficult for you to get a phone like mine due to the limited distribution of Motorola in the Philippines. Secondly, the Motorola Blur is already a bit passe' .

For those of you who are still eager to get a phone like mine, may I suggest the Motorola Milestone 3. I snapped a picture of it at The Venetian in Macau two weekends ago (upper right unit in photo) and really admired it so. I'm not sure as of this writing if and when this beauty will hit Philippine shelves. Nevertheless, do watch out for it.

My First Android Part 2

Since I posted about my first Android, some friends have been wondering how that Motorola Blur looks like since this unit was never readily available in the Philippines.

Folks, here's a pic of that unit. As mentioned, I have been a Nokia Communicator user for the longest time. My inspiration to use the Communicator came from watching the movie, "The Saint". As such, I've been accustomed to punching in my text messages into hard keys. And so, when the time came for me to purchase my first Android, this Motorola Blur easily won over the HTC I was eyeing.
Back in November 2010, there wasn't an HTC with hard keys yet. Or, if there was, there wasn't any at the Singapore store I was in.

So here it is guys. Why am I thankful for it? Well primarily because it's Android. Secondly, it's smaller size allows me to have a smaller velcro holster on my belt as opposed to the one I used to have for my Nokia E90 Communicator.

My First Android

Good Morning Philippine Android World! Android Pub here. I call myself Android Pub because I'm the publisher of AndroidAlliance.ph .

Just in case you're curious on what Android I am using, I treasure my very first Android which I bought in Singapore last November 2010 within the vicinity of PhP 20,000.00.

How did I get to choosing this Android? Well, for many years I have been a Nokia Communicator user. I've been on the Communicator since the 9210i, then on the 9500, and then to the E90. Being a Communicator user, I have always felt the ease of punching into hard keys especially since I do a lot of business transactions.

Because of this, I have opted to get the Motorola Blur last year. It has a beautiful slide out keyboard and, it integrates my Social Media accounts in one consolidated address book. Although address book consolidation is standard these days, Motorola was way ahead of the pack when they did this last year.

Am I happy with it? You bet! It's just like having my old Nokia Communicators souped up with steroids!

A Cherry Android for Christmas?


I saw a question on the Facebook Page of the Philippine Android Community revolving around the Cherry Mobile brand. Well, here's some candid talk on Cherry Mobile phones. I got a Cherry Nova early this year. The main reason why I got it was because I knew that the chip inside was a Qualcomm chip. This phone did not disappoint at all. It has been dropped a few times and is still in perfect working order.

Furthermore, last summer, I brought this to the US and inserted a T-mobile SIM with 4G service. I must say that the performance was impressive! Wow if only we had that kind of service, we can really maximize our Android phones to the level they were designed to operate.

Net, I can really say that if you are looking for an entry level Android, the Cherry Nova is a good unit to start with.
