What is Gorilla Glass and why would you want it on your Android device?

If you've been a big fan of your mom's casseroles, chances are, her dishes were cooked in CorningWare, then served on Corelle plates. CorningWare and Corelle were the creme de la creme of cookware: their plates and casserole dishes were microwaveable, highly resistant to damage, and were prized by moms everywhere.

In 1998, however, Corning Incorporated sold CorningWare and Corelle and instead focused on technology and display devices. They also allocated a good amount of their resources to research. It was thanks to this move that Gorilla Glass was born.

Gorilla Glass, according to Corning's website itself, is described as:

"...an environmentally friendly alkali-aluminosilicate thin-sheet glass. Elegant and lightweight, Gorilla Glass is durable enough to resist many real-world events that commonly cause glass failure, enabling exciting new applications in technology and design.

All over the world, designers and manufacturers are choosing Corning Gorilla Glass for its exceptional beauty and toughness."

Here's more:

"Corning® Gorilla® Glass’s unique combination of beauty and toughness is creating exciting new possibilities for electronic devices.

Gorilla Glass features exceptional damage resistance to the scratches, drops, and bumps of everyday use. It’s thin, cool to the touch, and cleans easily – making it the perfect solution for sleek, seamless designs. And it’s sensitive enough to enable today’s most sophisticated touch applications.

Manufactured using Corning’s proprietary fusion process, Gorilla Glass features the same unparalleled surface quality as all of Corning’s high-technology display substrates.

Gorilla Glass is RF compatible, and its outstanding optical clarity makes it ideal for HD and 3-D television.

Corning Gorilla Glass is so versatile, we haven’t even scratched the surface of its design possibilities."

That being said, Gorilla Glass is what makes your Android (even Apple touchscreen device) sturdy and long-lived. With screens being the most abused parts of a touchscreen device, it is crucial to ensure that these are the sturdiest parts of the gadget."
Devices that use Gorilla Glass include gadgets from these companies:

Smartphones:
  • Acer
  • Dell
  • HTC
  • Kyocera
  • LG
  • MOTOROLA
  • NEC
  • Nokia
  • SK Telesys
  • Samsung

Slates/Tablets
  • ASUS Computer
  • Acer
  • Dell
  • Lenovo
  • MOTOROLA
  • Motion Computing
  • Samsung

Notebooks:

  • Acer
  • LG
  • Lenovo

TVs
  • Sony

Emerging Applications
  • Hyundai

That's a pretty good list of manufacturers, right there. So now you know which companies use Gorilla Glass. It's been said that Apple also uses Gorilla Glass, but a comment on this post says that Apple commissioned a third-party manufacturer to create a similar product. Still another post says that Apple has their own brand of Aluminosilicate glass. On the other hand, iPhone 4 users have complained of cracked "Gorilla Glass." Seems like one thing Apple should learn: there's virtue in leaving some things outsourced to the experts. In this case, glass-creation experts.

Either way, you know now which smartphones carry the indestructible glass by Corning Inc., you know how to choose.
